Cottonwood “cotton” is flying/ Bad Company

AsthmaBack To Snippet
Back To SITEMAPCottonwood “cotton” is flying/ Bad Company
Author: Thomas Ogren Cottonwood “cotton” is flying/ Bad CompanyÓ Thomas Leo OgrenI originally saw the question below posted in an Internet gardening forum and decided to answer it. It was a question I’d been asked many times before and I knew my answer would be useful in an article on springtime allergies caused by city trees. So I saved it to share with you here.“Does anyone else here really suffer from allergies when the seeds of Cottonwood are flying? I KNOW it is not the cottonwood but I am really curious as to what is pollinating at the same time.”Diana Pederson, Ingham County, Michigan, Zone 5, United States, author of Landscaping With Bible Plants: That’s a very good question. Around here, as the “cotton” (the seeds) of the female poplars (cottonwoods and aspens) and the willows is flying about, so is a good deal of pollen from different, unrelated species of trees. It is very common at this precise time that many people are suffering from extreme bouts of hay fever and often it is this “cotton” that gets the blame. Some city arborists refuse to plant female willows or poplars because of their firm (if mistaken) belief that this “cotton” is really some kind of pollen. But it isn’t pollen; it is seed. It is NOT what is causing the allergies at that time.By the time the seeds of the female willow and cottonwoods are flying, pollen from the males of these two species is already spent. However this flying of seed coincides with pollen release of many allergenic plants.Out West this is the same time that the millions of urban “fruitless” male mulberry trees are shedding their highly allergenic pollen. It is also the time that the olive trees are starting to release pollen. The cypress trees and shrubs are releasing very large amounts of pollen at this time too, as are the many male Ailanthus trees. At or about the same time the walnut trees are releasing a large amount of pollen, as are many species of hickory, butternut, and pecan. Perhaps the most pervasive at this point are the oaks, many species of which are still at this time covered with staminate flowers and just loaded with pollen. At the same time that the female willows and cottonwoods are releasing all that harmless fluff into the air, the birch trees have just finished shedding large amounts of pollen, much of which is still lying around on the ground. In southern areas the alders often bloom twice (as will many birch and junipers) and the second bloom of the alders sometimes will coincide precisely with the flying of the “cotton.”Also to take into consideration is that by the point in the year when the cottony seeds of the willows and poplars starts to float about, most of the male maples and male ash, and a large number of other trees and shrubs have already released their own pollen. Unless this pollen was washed away by strong downpours of rain, much of it is still lying about, and is still causing problems, weeks or sometimes even months after it was released. To add to all of the above, at precisely this same time, the grasses start to release pollen. The ornamental landscape clump grasses all produce huge amounts of pollen at this time, as do most bluegrass species, bentgrasses, Bahia grasses, and especially Bermuda lawns that have not been kept closely mowed. By the way, the newer hybrid Bermuda grasses are sterile and pollen-free, but not the old common Bermuda lawns by any means.By the time this poplar and willow “cotton” is in the air, many people with allergies are already starting to suffer from “systems overload.” There is so much pollen being released and so much just previously released, that it overwhelms the immune systems of many individuals. The result of course is allergy. The sad thing about this whole affair is that all too often these female willows or female poplars, female cottonwoods, female aspens, they get blamed for the pollen from the male trees and then people cut them down! Since female trees have flowers that are electrically charged negative - (their roots are grounded) and since pollen from male trees picks up a positive + charge as they tumble about in the air, the two are mutually attractive. Female trees are powerful air cleaners, air scrubbers. Every female tree that is chopped down makes the air in that neighborhood that much more allergenic. We need to protect our females!About the AuthorThomas Ogren is the author of Allergy-Free Gardening, Ten Speed Press. Tom does consulting work on plants and allergies for the USDA, county asthma coalitions, and the Canadian and American Lung Associations. He has appeared on HGTV and The Discovery Channel. His book, Safe Sex in the Garden, was published in 2003. His website: www.allergyfree-gardening.com…

Consider Allergies When Purchasing Kids Bedding

AsthmaBack To Snippet
Back To SITEMAPConsider Allergies When Purchasing Kids Bedding
Author: Daniel Urmann One of the key things parents or others tend to think about when considering buying kids bedding or baby bedding is the way it looks and whether or not the size is correct for their bed. These are, of course, very important considerations, because if the bedding won’t fit the bed you bought it for, it obviously won’t be of much use. On the same note, if the child hates the cartoon character or colors of their blanket or sheets, they are much less likely to be willing to sleep with them. What many parents don’t consider when purchasing kids bedding or baby bedding for a child are allergies that the child may have. One thing most people may not even think about is the allergy to latex. While most of the time, there is no latex added into the fibers that are in almost all sheets, blankets, or pillows, it is important to know that many times elastic or elastic threads are often used, and can cause problems for those with a latex allergy. While it isn’t very common that a pillow or blanket would have any elastic for any reason, do not forget that fitted sheets do use them around the corners to hold them tight to the mattress. Most of the time, there still wouldn’t be any need for concern about this, because the elastic will be under the mattress, but this is one reason it is very important to buy sheets for the correct size mattress. It may be tempting to use a bigger sheet when necessary, or even try to stretch a smaller sheet to fit, but both of these could easily come undone after any tossing and turning, and could cause the elastic to end up on the bed, and up against the child.Lycra is also made up partially of latex, so it is not a material that should be used by a person with a latex allergy. Usually there is no lycra in bedding products, but it is always best to find this out before purchasing. If you know that it is 100 percent cotton, though, it should be of no concern. Most manufacturers of lycra are moving away from latex because of new technology, but until they quit using it completely, it is good to be safe.Another allergy concern in kids bedding for children is how the bedding affects allergies to dust mites and asthma. Dust mites are the microscopic creatures that often live in pillows and mattresses, and their covers. In fact, bedding is known as a sort of haven for them, and it is the place they are most commonly found because they feed off of hair particles and shedding skin. Some baby bedding is designed to reduce the exposure to dust mites and other allergens. Many times these are recommended by allergists to prevent the person from inhaling dust that carries dust mite droppings, because doing so can cause allergies and worsen asthma. There are dust-mite-proof covers that are recommended for sufferers of these types of allergies. While many studies have shown that people who used these covers actually suffered the same from these conditions as those who did not, it is likely that those were situations where the person was using that as the only method of prevention. When used in conjunction with other ways, it is very possible that they will help, and will definitely do no harm. While studies have shown that using allergy-proof bedding alone doesn’t decrease a person’s allergies, the bedding itself actually has been proven to reduce a person’s exposure to dust mites, which leads to the conclusion that they should be used, but they should be used in conjunction with other preventative measures.Article by Avid Amiri - President of The Kids and Baby Bedding Company. …

Coffee and Health

AsthmaBack To Snippet
Back To SITEMAPCoffee and Health
Author: Iulia Pascanu From the year dot, my mother taught all her children that coffee was not bad for you. But of course it is. As a result, I managed to keep away from coffee, at least until the difficult age of 10, when, as I recall, I was allowed to join my mother and her neighbors in their regular gossip sessions at the coffee table. That was when I started to exercise my taste buds on coffee. In those days, I developed a liking for coffee with milk. Perhaps I should have said I drank milk with coffee. However, I know now that the coffee I was drinking back then really was not so good. It was pre-ground, over-boiled and sometimes brewed with the grounds from the day before. Could you imagine anything worse? No wonder I wanted to hide that hideous flavor with tons of milk.In the meantime, I probably took a good sip of coffee on the road and woke up to a much more pleasant reality. Coffee can be very good. But why do so many voices whisper that coffee and health do not belong together?CaffeineCall it food or beverage, coffee is free of any nutritional value. As indecent as it may sound, we consume it exclusively for pleasure.Yes, the caffeine content in coffee is partly responsible for that pleasure. Caffeine acts as a mild stimulant across the central nervous system. It leads to a better memory, better judgments and idea associations, better coordination of body movement.A single-serve espresso contains between 80 and 120 milligrams of caffeine. A normal cup of coffee (even drip coffee) contains about 100 - 150 milligrams of caffeine. Common sense calls this moderate consumption at one sitting. Within several hours (although this may vary from one person to another) caffeine is eliminated from the body. Average coffee drinkers can have three or four cups of coffee every day without from any health risk.As with other foods and beverages, the effects of coffee consumption vary with the dose. Moderate coffee-drinking can be medicinal. Excessive coffee-drinking can be poison. The average female coffee drinker can experience ill-effects after ingesting 550 milligrams at one session. The amount for males is 700 milligrams. These effects refer to headaches, nausea and petulance. Ten grams of caffeine constitutes an overdose. This would be impossible to reach exclusively by drinking coffee. You would need to ingest 100 cups at one session. If you ever do, this may be the last thing you will ever do.Coffee consumption is not recommended when certain health problems arise. While we have no solid proof for this it is wise to avoid unwanted risks.AcidityAcidity describes the sour component of the coffee taste. It is particularly strong in Arabica coffee and in light roasts. It may have a negative effect on digestion. People less tolerant of acidity but who still wish to drink coffee, can choose a decaffeinated coffee or a natural low-acidity coffee from Brazil, India or the Caribbean.Other effects noted (for example, in pregnant women) have not been proved to be significantly negative. The medical community today has tended to clear coffee of long-term negative effects upon human health. The beneficial effects of coffeeCoffee has proved beneficial for asthma sufferers. Two to four small cups of coffee throughout the day will help to reduce the recurrence of astma-attacks, and moderate their intensity.Coffee contains natural antioxidants called ‘flavonoids’ which are widely known as disease protectors. The beneficial effects of moderate caffeine consumption are widely recognised: caffeine works on alertness, mood, sensorial activity and memory. Of course, you may choose to take your daily caffeine ration from other foods and beverages, such as chocolate, carbonated drinks based on coca-nut extract, or tea.Beside these effects, more or less proved by the medical community, I would mention one more: the pure pleasure of sipping a good cup of coffee. If every person on this planet did this every day, I believe there would be fewer wars, suicides and health problems generally, fewer people who suffer from depression. But I could be wrong.Iulia Pascanu writes for http://www.madcoffeemaker.com where you can find more information about The Mad Coffee MakerPlease feel free to use this article in your Newsletter or on your website. Coffee - Is It The Most Popular Beverage Of All Time?

AsthmaBack To Snippet
Back To SITEMAPCoffee - Is It The Most Popular Beverage Of All Time?
Author: Valerie Shapero Around 850 A.D it is thought that a lone shepherd and his sheep happened upon a strange and mysterious plant growing upon a secluded and forgotten hillside. Before he could stop them some of his herd had began to gnaw away at this unusual berry. After about fifteen minutes or so the herder started to notice that his sheep were behaving in an odd manner. Not only were they unusually alert but they also appeared to be extremely hyperactive. Now being a little weary and extremely tired the shepherd decided to try the berries and see if the end results would be the same for him as they had been for his flock. To his pleasant surprise the shepherd began to feel wide awake and he too became very alert. After a few hours had passed along came a wandering monk who, after being informed of the plants amazing qualities proceeded to scold the poor shepherd and lecture him on his foolish indulgence. After he had finished telling the shepherd just what a sinner he had been the monk set upon his journey but not before he had added a little something to his backpack and supplies.Back at the abbey the monks decided to try this new magical stimulant. Soon the endless hours of praying became easy to endure. Coffee the beverage had been unleashed. Its widespread use first took hold in the Ethiopian regions before then moving on to the Arabian empire. Here it was to be held for many years as a sacred substance until it was illegally exported to the outside world by an Arab called Baba Budan. Word of its effects then began to spread and in a short while coffee was to become one of the most treasured commodities in our history. Today we drink a staggering 4 billion cups each and every year and there are many among us who would simply refuse to start our day without it.Although coffee is mainly known as a sleep suppressant there are those who consider coffee to have many health benefits. It is thought that people who suffer from asthma and partake of the beverage have at least 25% less symptoms which may be due to a substance in coffee called theophylline. This is known as a bronchodilator and quite simply it is thought to help those who suffer with the disease to breath with a little more ease. Drinking coffee on a daily basis is also thought to help lower your chances of developing colon cancer by a figure also in the region of about 25%. This may be due to the fact that coffee helps to keep you regular. Coffee can do more than just help you get through your day.Apart from the benefits that have just been mentioned it has to be said that simply drinking coffee as a beverage is a delight that cannot easily be surpassed. The amazing thing is that the average person has no idea of the varied tastes that this hallowed bean has to offer. One of the growing trends of recent years has to be the rising popularity of ordering coffee via the wonder we call the internet. Never before have we been able to sample such a wide variety of tastes, blends and aromas without having to endure the tedious trials of hiking around the city. I myself tend to place small orders but I always make a point to record the name, blend and of course exactly from whom I purchased. Now that you are aware of the tale of the mystical beans I hope that if in the days to come you are considering visiting your local coffee shop you recall the story of the lowly shepherd and think about just what you might be drinking were he not to have wandered onto that bleak and lonely hillside. Why not take advantage of the internet and try the many different varieties and blends available. Not only will you impress your tastebuds, your friends will be grateful as well.Cappuccino or latte?Valerie Shapero is the owner of Fuzzy Coffee which is a premier source of information about coffee. Clearing the Air on What to Look for in an Air Purifier

AsthmaBack To Snippet
Back To SITEMAPClearing the Air on What to Look for in an Air Purifier
Author: Lori Wilkerson If you are dedicated to improving the indoor air quality of your home, you’re aware that there are certain steps you need to take to reduce the amount of allergens and airborne particles. Two of these, source control and ventilation, you may have already addressed. But the third, finding a good air purifier, can be confusing if you aren’t sure what to look for in this type of home appliance. Fortunately, once you understand the basic types of air cleaners and how they work it becomes easier to select the right style of air purifier for you and your family. There are also organizations like the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) who review and certify air purifiers annually using a standardized testing and ratings system to make it easy for you to compare different models to one another. What Kinds of Air Purifiers Are There?Ozone Air Purifiers These release small amounts of ozone (positively charged oxygen molecules) into the air to reduce airborne pollutants. They also are very effective at reducing odors, and will sometimes give off a fresh, sharp scent rather like the odor after a thunderstorm. Electrostatic Air Purifiers These use static electricity to draw airborne particles to the filters contained in the unit. The particles stick to the filter. (Who knew something so annoying could be so handy?) When the filters are full, you throw them out and replace them. These are usually used as a furnace filter or as a pre-filter component on some other type of air purifier (such as an ozone or ionizer system). Electro-Static Precipitators Similar to an electrostatic purifier, these also use a static charge, but there are no filters to throw away. Instead, two metal plates create two opposite electrostatic charges. These attract airborne particles, including dust, smoke and pollen, to one of the plates. When the plate is coated, you can remove it, rinse clean and use it again. Ionizers These release a magnetic charge into the air that will cause airborne particles to stick to the filter. HEPA Filters HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters, and are designed to remove 99.97% of airborne pollutants as they pass through the filter. Trapped germs die from lack of moisture, making them ideal for operating rooms and electronic labs. HEPA filters are sometimes added to an existing system such as your heating and/or air conditioning unit. Each of these types is good for different situations, and you can also find many air purifiers that combine two or more methods for greater efficiency. More important than the particular method you choose is how effective it actually is. No matter which kind you have or how much you paid for it, if it isn’t doing the job, you’ve wasted you money. How Do I Know if the Air Purifier I’m Considering Will Do the Job?There are two things to look for any time you shop for an air cleaner: the MERV and the CADR. These are ratings developed to help you compare one brand and style of air purifier to another, regardless of whether they are ionizers, electrostatic, or ozone, and get an idea of their relative efficiency. What’s a MERV?MERV means Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) developed a range of numbers to help consumers compare filters. The higher a MERV number, the better a filter performs.A filter generally has two features that will be important to you: how quickly the air can flow through it and how well it filters out pollutants. The higher a MERV number, the more dense the filter and the more particulates it will capture. Okay, what’s a CADR? We mentioned CADR earlier, and it is the most important rating to look for overall. It stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate, and is exactly what it sounds like – it tells you how quickly it will circulate clean air throughout the room, filtering all of the air through the filtering system once. Currently, twenty-nine manufacturers of air purifiers list their CADR rating on their packaging so that you can easily compare them to each other. You should look for an air purifier with a CADR number that is equal to about two-thirds the size of the room you will be using it in. For instance, if you have a 10’ X 15’ room (150 square feet), then you should get a purifier with a CADR number no less than 100. If you get a rating higher than you need, you will simply have your air cleaned even more quickly and efficiently, but if you get a rating lower than recommended, the efficiency won’t be there and the air purifier will struggle. There will actually be three CADR numbers: one for pollen, one for tobacco smoke, and one for dust. For the best results, use the number for tobacco smoke, which is the smallest particulate in the ratings system. But What About Cost?Obviously cost is an issue to most of us – if we were made of money, we’d simply hire someone to come in and sterilize our homes and install whole-house air purification systems, hire daily cleaning teams, have someone follow the dogs around sucking up the pet dander….where were we? Oh! Cost! The cost of air purifiers can vary widely, and it’s a bit surprising to note that you can’t always judge the value of an air cleaner by its cost. There are several things to consider when you buy one that will impact your decision. While you may pay less for one over another initially, operating costs and accessories can add up over time, making some systems much more expensive in the long run.Filters If you choose an air purifier that uses paper or fiber filters that are disposable, be sure that they are HEPA filters. These are 99.97% efficient for dust and mold spores and well worth the cost. Anything less is throwing money away. Also check to see if you can order replacement filters in bulk for a discounted price.Plates An air purifier with cleanable plates may cost more initially, but figure out the cost of filters over a few years’ time and compare. Will you save money by paying more up front and cleaning the metal plates rather than worrying about the filters?Operating Costs Always try to find out what the estimated operating costs will be. What does the manufacturer estimate the monthly electrical usage will be? Will the air purifier run constantly or will it cycle?Extras If you have someone in your family who is particularly sensitive to environmental changes, such as a migraine sufferer, you may consider some extras such as a programmable ozone monitor, worth the extra money in order to prevent sensitivities being triggered. With so many excellent air purifiers on the market and the Internet available as an excellent information resource, there’s no excuse not to invest in improving the quality of your home’s air. It’s a relatively inexpensive way to cut down on colds, respiratory infections, asthma attacks and a host of other health problems by allowing everyone in your house to breathe easier.About the AuthorLori Wilkerson is a full-time freelance writer. Right now she knows a little bit about almost everything and a lot about electrical air purifiers, ozone air purifiers, and whole house air purifiers. Clean Your House Green for your Children’s Sake

AsthmaBack To Snippet
Back To SITEMAPClean Your House Green for your Children’s Sake
Author: Dave Zielski My thirteen-year-old daughter recently called me up to say she had cleaned the whole kitchen and bathroom herself. So many emotions ran through me at that moment. First, I was shocked by the fact that no one asked her to do so. I was also happy that she had done this but anxious at the same time because this was a Thursday afternoon and knowing that during the next 24 hours would come my payback, a ride home from a party or a couple of her friends sleeping over for the weekend. But the one thing I was not feeling was worried that my little girl was exposed to toxic chemicals that most of us use in our homes. Two years ago we made the switch to all natural non-toxic cleaning products.Up until a few years ago, most household and commercially purchased cleaning products were “petro-chemically” derived or “synthetic”. These types of products are literally made from crude petroleum oil. As our use of these cleaners in our homes, schools, and workplaces has grown over the last 60 years, the incidence of diseases like cancer and asthma has grown dramatically as well, and many experts see a clear connection between the two. It’s a picture vividly painted by the numbers: From 1973 to 1998, the overall incidence of cancer increased by almost 25%. In the last 20 years, asthma rates have skyrocketed almost 50%. Americans now spend billions every year to deal with allergic diseases including a brand new one called multiple chemical sensitivity whose symptom is currently reported by 15-30% of the U.S. population.Children are more vulnerable to environmentally caused diseases than adults. This is because children are of course smaller, and their systems are still developing. A child’s ability to flush out environmental toxins is not developed until they are around seven years old so they absorb and retain more toxins than adults. For example, children absorb about 50% of the lead they are exposed to, while adults absorb only 10-15%.Here are some shocking facts compiled by the City of Boulder, Colorado:· Indoor air is often two to five times more contaminated than outdoor air.· Childhood asthma has nearly doubled in the last 20 years (American Lung Assoc.) and some cleaners may be triggers to asthma attacks.· The average home contains 25 gallons of hazardous chemicals – a major portion of these can be found in household cleaning products.· In 1999, 92% of all poisonings occurred in the home.· Cleaning products are involved in 11% of poisoning exposure in children less than 6 years of age.· 70,000 synthetic chemicals are in production today. Many are suspected to cause cancer or other health effects, but only 600 have been adequately tested. Many people who are exposed to a variety of petrochemicals in our environment do not reach acute toxic exposure, which leads to cancer or death. However, they may experience an array of subtle symptoms, including headaches, rashes, or breathing difficulties, which, while less dramatic, can be extremely debilitating. These effects are even more devastating in young children. Compounding this problem is the difficulty of isolating which chemicals present in homes, schools, offices or even cars is causing the problem. The manufacturers of the traditional cleaning products are protected by trade secret labeling laws, which do not require them to list all ingredients. Although chemical information is required by law on products used in the workplace, this toxic information is not currently required on the products we use daily in our homes. Kathy Cooper, Sr. Environmental Law Researcher states: “Most consumers assume that if it’s on the store shelf, it has been tested and it is safe. That is far from the truth. The Government and manufacturers are currently under no obligation to tell us about long-term toxicity of common household cleaners”. Children’s developing bodies are more vulnerable to toxins than those of adults, says Susan JunFish, who used to work for the Environmental Protection Agency. And they’re more likely to get toxins into their bodies. Their hands are on everything and then go in their mouths—an average of ten times an hour, according to one study. These toxic cleaning products are slowly gaining attention, not only by environmentalist groups but on a City and State level as well. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the city of Seattle have taken the first step towards recognizing the importance’s of Environmentally preferable cleaning products and has awarded contracts to companies that meet certain criteria. These products will have less of an impact on the environment than their traditional counterparts because they are generally less toxic and contain lower concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ozone depleting chemicals (ODCs), and carcinogens. Environmentally preferable cleaning products must also be offered in recycled-content, recyclable and/or reduced packaging. Our children are what we live for. We go to great lengths to shelter and protect them from all that is bad in the world. Why subject them to harsh toxic chemicals when there are alternatives available that are both safe and effective. By switching to all natural non toxic cleaners, you will not only be helping your children, you will be helping yourself, your pets and the precious environment we inhabit.David Zielski started Seaside Naturals with his wife Linda. Chocolate Healing! A Delicious Healer for diabetes, cholesterol and more

Back To SITEMAPChocolate Healing! A Delicious Healer for diabetes, cholesterol and more
Author: DPP by Douglas Peterson The NEW medicine food in town that helps fight heart disease, lung cancer, prostate cancer, asthma, and type 2 diabetes. High-powered healing never tasted so good! COCOA BEATS WINE AND TEA FOR ANTIOXIDANT POWER. It’s true. Research has shown the antioxidant punch of cocoa was, on a per serving basis, the highest - almost twice as strong as red wine, two to three times stronger than green tea, and four to five times stronger than black tea. “Cocoa is rich in antioxidant flavonoids called flavonols, which include procyanidins, epicatechins, and catechins,” explains Harold Schmitz, Ph.D. Studies have shown that people with high blood levels of flavonoids have lower risk of heart disease, lung cancer, prostate cancer, asthma, and type 2 diabetes. “An overweight America is killing itself with excess and all that can save it is a major cultural transformation led by individuals and families,” Dr. Richard Carmona, U.S. surgeon general said January, 2003, calling obesity the fastest growing cause of illness & death in the United States due to self-indulgent ravagings, and it deserved more attention than any other epidemic. In fact, the U.S. surgeon general and Centers for Disease Control state that over 85% of the illness associated with this epidemic can be PREVENTED!!! For example, 300,000 Americans die prematurely every year from causes related to obesity. In case that does not sound “too bad” that is 822 per day. During WWII, we lost 292 per day and that war is over. Where is the end to the war on obesity? How do we turn this deadly tide living in today’s “junk food” society? With a certain brand name (named in your free report) powerhouse antioxidant! An Irving, Texas based company, has just released an amazing ORAC score of its chocolate flavored rice bran PLUS that has turned some heads in the nutritional science community. For those of you that are not familiar with ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity), this is the scientific testing method developed by Tufts University in Boston to measure the level of antioxidant protection of a product. This is important because oxidative stress has been demonstrated to accelerate the aging process in both cells and blood vessels. Oxidative stress also increases the risk of certain types of cancers, coronary heart disease and many other health maladies. According to Dr. David Williams, author of “Alternatives”, “Long-term free-radical damage is now recognized as the greatest contributor to age-related health problems. By limiting the activity of oxygen free radicals, antioxidants protect cells and their components from this damage-thereby lessening the risk of cancer, heart disease, vision problems and other diseases. The higher the ORAC value…the more beneficial it is to your health.” The chocolate flavored nutritional beverage mix tested a phenomenal score of 21,010 ORAC units per serving (22 grams). What does that mean to you and me? The USDA and Harvard School of Public Health recommend we eat a minimum of five servings of fruit and vegetables a day in order to become healthy enough to ward off aging related diseases. Fruits and vegetables contain highly valuable phytonutrients for our health, particularly key antioxidants that are not available in other food groups or vitamins and minerals supplements. An average serving of fruits or vegetables contains approximately 500 ORAC units. The USDA recommendation of five servings of fruits and vegetables daily equates to 2500 ORAC units. It’s hard to believe that we can obtain 8 times that much antioxidant power in only one scoop of the chocolate rice bran PLUS. For the vast majority of us this becomes very good news since we were falling a little short on the five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. ======================================================= Discover how to easily release the healing power of this delicious super-chocolate in your life.
